WILD BILL WEDSWILD BILL WEDS

It was one of the highlights of the summer social season in Deadwood.

Although the historic old town sees many non-traditional weddings, particularly during the Sturgis Rally, this was one of the most unusual in recent years.

Jack McCall announced the nuptials were about to begin by firing his six-shooter in the air. The other groomsmen, members of the Deadwood Alive street show cast, joined in a volley of pistol shots as buckskin clad Calamity Jane cracked her bullwhip.

After that introduction, the joining of Wild Bill and Arizona Annie in the bonds of holy matrimony was almost an anti-climax, although Deadwood Mayor Barbara Allen performed the traditional ceremony in her usual composed and dignified manner.

Wearing 1880s knickers, boots, cap and vest accessorized with a deputy sheriff’s badge, the young ring bearer all but stole the show. He kept his six shooters holstered, at least until the vows were read.

Oh yes, the wedding on the veranda of the Franklin Hotel was for real. Jim West and Julie Breiter are now husband and wife.
